Ingredients

For the Bowl

  • 1 lb Ground Beef (Lean beef for a healthier option)
  • 3 medium Red Potatoes (Can substitute with brown rice)
  • 1 cup Onions (Caramelized for added depth)
  • 1 cup Shredded Cheese (Colby Jack or pepper jack recommended)
  • ½ cup Mayo (Adjust for desired creaminess)
  • 2 tbsp Ketchup (Use low-sugar for a healthier option)
  • 1 tbsp Mustard (Dijon is a great choice)
  • 1 tbsp Cajun Seasoning (Adjust to taste)
  • ½ cup Pickles (Adds crunch)
  • 1 cup Lettuce (Any leafy greens work)

Instructions

Preparation

  • Wash and quarter the red potatoes. If you prefer lower carbs, prepare cauliflower rice or brown rice as your base instead.
  • Finely slice the onions.
  • Mix mayo, ketchup, and Dijon mustard in a small bowl with a pinch of salt and the Cajun seasoning to taste—this becomes your burger sauce. Taste and adjust creaminess or tang.
  • Form the ground beef into 4 loose 3–4 oz balls. Do not overwork the meat; loosely packed balls smash better.

Cooking Potatoes

  • Roasting (recommended for more flavor): Toss potato quarters with a tablespoon of oil, a pinch of salt, and a little black pepper. Roast at 425°F (220°C) on a baking tray for 20–25 minutes until fork-tender and slightly crisped. For extra caramelization, finish under the broiler for 1–2 minutes.
  • Boiling (quicker, softer): Place potatoes in salted water and simmer 12–15 minutes until tender. Drain well and pat dry; then sauté briefly in a hot skillet with a teaspoon of oil to get a light crust.

Caramelizing Onions

  • In a skillet over medium heat, add 1–2 tablespoons of oil or butter.
  • Add sliced onions with a pinch of salt and cook, stirring occasionally, until deep golden and sweet—about 10–12 minutes.

Smash Burgers

  • Heat a heavy skillet or cast-iron pan over high heat until very hot.
  • Place each beef ball on the hot skillet and immediately press down firmly with a spatula or burger press to form thin patties. Sprinkle a little Cajun seasoning on each.
  • Let cook without moving for about 2–3 minutes until edges are deeply browned and crisp.
  • Flip once, and cook another 1–2 minutes until done (internal temp for beef: 160°F/71°C recommended for ground beef).

Assembling the Bowls

  • Start with a base of roasted/boiled potatoes or your chosen substitute.
  • Layer caramelized onions, then arrange 1–2 smashed patties per bowl.
  • Top with melted cheese, pickles, and a handful of lettuce.
  • Drizzle the burger sauce over the top and finish with extra Cajun seasoning or chopped fresh herbs like parsley or chives.

Notes

For halal-friendly results, use certified halal ground beef and check that shredded cheese and mayo are made with halal-friendly ingredients. Adjust the Cajun seasoning to be milder or stronger depending on family tastes; smoked paprika or a pinch of cumin are great alternatives.
